FastPay User FAQs

1. How do I sign up for a FastPay account?

Activate your badge by creating your personal FastPay account at FreedomPay using the first 8 digits of your badge number as your FastPay account number. 

2. How do I put money onto my account?

You choose how you want to fund your account either through your credit or debit card, bank account, or cash.

  • Credit or Debit Card - FreedomPay charges a nominal transaction fee of $2.50 per month with unlimited account replenishment.
  • Bank account - Monthly fee is waived.  We encourage people to use this option.
  • Cash - There are funding stations at Moffit Cafe at Paranssus and Shorentein Family Cafe at Mission Bay.  There are no fees for this option.

If you will be away for more than 120 days (4 months), contact Freedom Pay Member Services at 1-888-495-0222 to avoid a $2.50 per month non-usage charge

3. I lost my ID badge. How do I cancel my account or it put it on hold?

You can call the Member Services center at 1-888-495-0222 or via e-mail at Member Services. They can cancel your account 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You also can login into your account at FreedomPay and inactivate your badge under the Manage Tags section of your account. When you get your new ID badge, you can add the new number to associate your account with your badge. If you run into trouble call the Member Services center.

4. I'm leaving UCSF and have money in my account. How do I get a refund?

Your FastPay account is with our service provider, FreedomPay - not UCSF. You can only close your account by calling FreedomPay at 1-888-495-0222. It is a relatively quick process and they can deposit your balance into the bank account online or send you a check.

5. Why should I sign up for a FastPay account?

  • Accepted at a variety of dining options and gift shops at multiple UCSF locations
  • Payment is as easy as swiping your UCSF ID badge. No need to carry cash or credit cards
  • Get a 10% discount with every purchase at all hospital cafes and coffee shops

6. Where is FastPay accepted?

FastPay is currently accepted at approximately 27 different retail outlets. For a complete list of vendors, go to our Participating Merchants list. FastPay is available at the Parnassus, Mount Zion, Mission Bay and Mission Center Building campuses. Most food vendors, and all Hospital Gift Shops at UCSF accepts FastPay as a way to pay for your purchases.

7. How long does it take to set up a FastPay account?

If you just got a brand new ID badge, wait 24 hours for the system to update. Our system provides new valid ID numbers to our FastPay vendor at the end of every day. Once they have the number, you can activate your account or add the new badge number.

8. Does using FastPay provide a discount?

Generally there are no discounts for using FastPay.  However, Moffitt Cafe & Moffitt Cafe Express at Parnassus Heights, Mount Zion Cafe & Daily Grind at Mount Zion, and Shorenstein Family Cafe, Shorenstein Cafe Express & Equator Cafe at Mission Bay do provide a 10% discount on most items if you use FastPay.

9. I am going on leave (e.g. maternity leave, sabbactical, etc.) from UCSF. Should I close my account?

You do not need to close your account. You should contact FreedomPay at 1-888-495-0222 or via e-mail at Member Services to let them know when you are going on leave. If you do not contact them, you will be charged a $2 monthly fee after 120 days of non-use. When you return contact FreedomPay as above and they will reactive your account.

10. I normally fund my account with cash or via bank account. I used my credit/debit card at a funding station and was charged a fee. Why?

The terms and conditions of the account include the $2.50 Platinum Service fee for the month when you used the credit or debit card. If you continue to fund your account with cash or a bank account, this fee will be for the instance when you used the credit or debit card and the fee should not continue.  

11. I have a new ID badge. How do I access my money?

You have three options to link your new badge to your FastPay account:

  1. Login to your member account at FreedomPay
    1. On the left menu click Manage My Tag or Badge.
    2. Click on the Deactivate button next to your current ID Badge under Tag Action.
    3. Under the Add New Tag heading, enter your new Tag ID Number (Badge ID number). This number can be found on the back of your ID Badge and is only the first 8 digits of the badge number.
  2. Contact FreedomPay Member Services via email at Member Services . Provide your name and new Badge (Tag ID) Number. This number can be found on the back of your ID badge at the bottom, and is only the first 8 digits of the number printed.
  3. Contact FreedomPay Member Services via phone at 1-888-495-0222. Be ready to provide the first 8 digits of your new ID badge.

Please note that it may take up to 24 hours for the change to take effect depending on when you make the changes in your FastPay account relative to receiving your new ID.

12. How do I find the balance of my card?

There are 4 ways to get the balance of your FastPay card:

  1. The funding station kiosk at Moffitt Café (Parnassus Heights) and Shorenstein Family Café (Mission Bay).
  2. Log into your account at FreedomPay
  3. Your receipt from Moffitt Café, Moffitt Cafe Express (Parnassus Heights), Shorenstein Family Café, Shorenstein Express, Gateway Express (Mission Bay), Mount Zion Café, and The Daily Grind (Mount Zion)
  4. Call FreedomPay Member Services at 1-888-495-0222

13. I have a blue FastPay card. Can I add money to it?

No. The blue FastPay cards are supported with department funds for residents, fellows, social work clients, and other specific types of meal programs. Comingling of department funds and personal funds is not allowed.
